The catnip plant is most commonly known as an herb of recreation for felines. This herb is also known for its soothing effects and medicinal use for treating cold, flu and digestive issues. Many people enjoy a tea made from the herb, but tinctures, infusions, and poultices have also been crafted from catnip.
In ancient Greek and Roman history Catnip symbolized fertility and was associated with goddesses of a cat and a lion. It was believed to transform women into cats at night. In the language of flora it is said to symbolize intoxication with love.
Catnip tea has been used to treat headache and upset stomach, induce sleep, and relieve colic in children. Chewing the fresh leaves can also alleviate toothache. It has also been ultilized as a home remedy for colds, anxiety, fever, and nightmares.Â
Catnip tea is calming and helps promote deep relaxation and sleep, especially when blended with lemon balm and chamomile.
The scent of catnip acts as a mild sedative in aromatherapy, the opposite effect in humans as for cats. Catnip is most often used in sleep or relaxation teas as well as in sleep promoting sachet blends.
