Oregon grape is an evergreen shrub related to the barberry. It is commonly employed as an alternative to goldenseal, due in part to their similar berberine content.
Oregon grape root, has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly among Native American tribes.
Grape root has been used topically for various skin problems, such as eczema, psoriasis, and wounds. It's thought to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It has also been used traditionally for digestive complaints, such as indigestion and stomach upset.
Grape root has been used to fight various infections, both internally and externally. Some believe it has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.
In some traditional systems, grape root was used to support liver function.
To prepare as a tea:
Add 1 tsp. of herb to 8 oz. water in a pot.
Cover and simmer for 15-30 minutes, strain and serve immediately.
