Native American tribes such as the Lakota, Ojibwa, Cherokee, Iroquois recognize the healing potential of Slippery Elm and utilize it for a range of health purposes. The mucilaginous bark is often used to create balms, poultices, and teas for medicinal purposes. Early European settlers in North America quickly adopted Slippery Elm into their own herbal traditions, where it became a staple remedy in frontier life.
The inner bark of the Slippery Elm tree is harvested and can be steeped or ground into a fine powder, creating a mucilaginous texture. This mucilage is rich in complex carbohydrates, making it soothing and nourishing. Slippery Elm’s mucilaginous nature makes this plant a unique addition to your herbal library!
Today, it is commonly used in capsules, teas, and lozenges.
To prepare as tea pour 8 oz. of boiling water over 1 tsp. of herb.
Cover and steep 3-5 minutes. Strain, Serve & Enjoy!
