Witch hazel bark, and sometimes the leaves, have a long history of traditional use, particularly among Native Americans.

Witch hazel is well-known for its astringent properties, meaning it can help tighten pores and reduce inflammation. It's often used for minor skin irritations, such as cuts, scrapes, bug bites, and sunburns.

Due to its astringent and anti-inflammatory effects, witch hazel is sometimes used to relieve discomfort from hemorrhoids.

It has been used traditionally for postpartum care, particularly to soothe perineal discomfort after childbirth.

Diluted witch hazel is sometimes used to relieve minor eye irritations, such as redness or itching.

Gargling with diluted witch hazel may be used to soothe a sore throat.

Beyond its practical uses in traditional medicine, Witch Hazel also carries some interesting lore and folklore, particularly in connection with its use by Native American cultures.

Many Native American tribes, particularly in the eastern woodlands of North America, used witch hazel for various medicinal purposes. Some tribes also had stories and beliefs associated with the plant, often related to its healing properties. The specific stories and uses vary between different tribes.

In some European and American folklore, witch hazel branches were sometimes used as divining rods (also known as dowsing rods) to find underground water or minerals. The forked branch would supposedly dip or twitch when it passed over the desired substance.

In some folk traditions, witch hazel was believed to have protective properties. Used in rituals or charms to ward off evil spirits or negative energy.

While not as widely recognized as some other plants, witch hazel is associated with themes of healing, cleansing, and protection in interpretations of plant symbolism.
